Welcome to the summer world of outdoor sculpture and shadow-play.

During summer, Gallery Ysebaert in East Flanders in Belgium is again opening its sculpture garden, this year featuring outdoor monuments and poetic installations by contemporary artists from Belgium, The Netherlands, France, Spain, the U.S. and beyond. Many of the participating artists in this exhibition, entitled Shapes in the Sun, are inspired by natural forms, including figurative works by Emmanuel Fillion, Francesca Marti’ and Catherine Thiry. Stylized plants and trees appear as simplified structures cast as branches, twigs and leaves in the sculptures of Piet Warffemius. Eelke van Willegen creates curving, wave-like forms representing the power of crashing waves made from metal, then painted in bold colours.

For Shapes in the Sun, Marti’ will be represented by her life-sized Dreamer – Alpha Virginis in polished aluminium, and a series of new works in the gallery including small installations depicting her Turning Chaos cityscapes of blurred streets and nightlights enclosed in polycarbonate boxes, and her smaller Believers of Eindhoven sculptures. Rotational lights (2025) shows a spinning cityscape with neon night-lights and curved pastel markings in gold and copper. Small Believers painted in metallic and purple tones follow the spinning movement in arcs. Speed of light (2025) represents a high-velocity, futuristic streetscape. Featuring out-of-focus lights and swerving colour, rows of small Believers seem to be frozen in high speed movement, showing different «personalities» based on their sequence and spacing apart.
