Portraits of vocalist Gunnlaug Thorvaldsdottir as the “Migrant Angel”, printed in satellite dishes in the studio of Francesca Martì in Sóller, in preparation for her solo show at Galeria Kreisler in Madrid in December 2016

This solo exhibition of new video installations, sculptures, photography, paintings, drawings and a live performance by renowned Icelandic vocalist Gunnlaug Thoraldsdottir, is based around the imaginary figure of the Migrant Angel, a perpetual traveler lost in transit. Using bright, fluorescent colours, Martì’s works have been inspired by urban landscapes in Korea and the city of Seoul, with crowded shopping malls, busy underground walkways, glowing neon lights, huge advertising screens, and the hectic bustle at Incheon Airport. The show also includes a monumental polished bronze sculpture of a crouching male figure from Martì’s expressive Dreamers series, posed as an isolated icon of contemplation. This exhibition at the prestigious Galeria Kreisler in Madrid, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, has been selected as part of the 2016 Bienal Miradas de Mujeres, the Spanish biennale dedicated to cultural events by women artists. Curated by Pilar Ribal, Migrant Angel is Francesca Martì’s first major solo show in the Spanish capital since 2003.
